Review
Verlinden Wespe Driver's Compartment by Phil Novak
Usually, when I see most kits from Verlinden I'm quite impressed with the quality of the castings and the inclusion of all the major components, and them in their right spots. However this set is a little different. Now don't get me wrong here, the castings are beautiful and the things included are nicely detailed and are amazing little replicas of the real thing. However I was not completely satisfied.
I managed to get a copy of Wespe reference by Tomas Jentz, which
was very nicely done. And after studying the book, I noticed that
there were a number of things that were botched by Verlinden. First
was the driver's instrument panel. Verlinden has this part located at
a 45-degree angle on top of the transmission. However, the
reference showed that the panel was right in front of the driver and
it was a rectangle, not an odd puddle shape like Verlinden's.
Also there was a tunnel that was behind the driver's seat the allowed access of the engine for spark plug maintenance. This tunnel is missing completely on Verlinden's replica. Yet another thing that is missing are the brake levers that would be on either side of the drivers seat. Various tool racks on the sidewalls of the compartment are also missing; all of this of course in reference to Jentz's book on the Wespe.
And of course keeping with Verlinden's standard no painting guide is included. (Please Mr. Verlinden!!! Give
us a break!!!! We DO paint these things!!) So for the most part, this set could be a lot better. I would try the
Tank Workshop's interior before this one, even though I have yet to see it in person.
