Chevy L89 Chevy Big Block: The newest addition to Revell's line of metal and plastic 1:6 scale engine kits, the Chevy Big Block 427 V-8 (No.85-1141) found its way into Chevy cars like the Impala, Camaro and Corvette during the '60s. With three two-barrel carbs, the L89 cranked out 435 hp. "The galleon appeared on the early morning horizon, off the port, bearing down on us from out of the blood-red sunrise. At first, we mistook her for another merchant ship, traveling home from Jamaica or the Bahamas, heavy with cargo. But no, she was moving too fast. As she approached, she dropped her main sail to reveal the skull and crossbones. We went hard to starboard, full speed. praying she would not catch us..." and that was the last entry in the journal found floating.

Fiction? Yes, but it is true that in mid-June, you will discover this new Revell kit, the Caribbean Pirate Ship, on the shelves of your local hobby retailer. Once assembled on its included stand, it will be approximately 9" long, molded in sinister black and will include waterslide decals. Suggested retail will be $15.95. Ask for kit number 85-0386.

Retooled 1/72 U-Boat

One of the most eagerly awaited new releases of the year is now available at your local retailer-the Revell of Germany VII C/41 German Submarine in 1:72 scale. This is the Atlantic version used later in the war.

Partly based on the extremely popular and award winning Type VII Submarine (Kit# 05015), approximately 60% of the 190 parts in this revised version are newly tooled. These include an authentic new conning tower with antenna, compass and protective shield detail, a new upper deck with engraving to represent wooden decking, a movable snorkel mast and a highly detailed 37 mm anti-aircraft cannon with protective shield. In addition, the rudder is positionable, the periscope can be extended and retracted in different positions and you have the option of open or closed torpedo hatches. The kit will also have material for reproducing the antenna and a display stand. You'll also find a gorgeous decal sheet printed in Italy with specific marking for submarine versions U 997, U 995, U 295, U 324, U 307 U 1023, U 1002 and U 1105.

This 1:72 scale model kit measures out at just over 3 feet in length when complete and requires paint and glue, which is sold separately. It's a Skill Level 5 kit on the Revell of Germany skill level scale so it's designed to be constructed by experienced modelers. Ask your local hobby retailer for Revell of Germany kit number 05045.

Plastic-model maker Revell-Monogram, Morton Grove, Ill., is moving to nearby Northbrook by Jan. 1. In addition, its domestic manufacturing operations are to be phased out first quarter of 2004 and relocated to China, meaning it becomes the last major plastic-model maker to move manufacturing overseas.

"Our current-line tooling will move overseas," said Melissa Palmquist, the company's manager of licensing and communications, and its acting national sales manager. In addition, about 150 tools will be moved to a manufacturing facility near Hong Kong, where the company also has an office. Tooling that is not being used will be stored at the company's new Northbrook facility. "We're not selling it," she said.

In Northbrook, Revell-Monogram will occupy a 200,000-square-foot facility that was formerly the headquarters for Crate & Barrel. Its main offices and distribution will be located there, as the building has 26 shipping wells. Distribution, which began in Northbrook on Oct. 1, had previously been handled by Alpha International, a former owner of Revell-Monogram that sold the company in November 2002.

"It's a new chapter in our life," said Palmquist, adding the company had been based in Morton Grove since 1961, when it was known as Monogram Models. It bought Revell in 1988. "I think to a certain degree, it's the diversification of business. The modelers are changing, the industry is changing. In order to continue to provide kits for our enthusiasts, we've had to re-evaluate our business."

That's not to suggest the company is in trouble, she was quick to add. "No, not at all," she said. "Sales have been solid and we're excited about 2004, with all the business plans we have."

Part of that includes the launching of a craft line, called Style Studios, in late October. It will feature primarily girls' crafts, including jewelry, candles, crayons, paints and art. "We're really looking forward to Style Studios, because we've been a boys' toys company for years," said Jim Foster, Revell-Monogram president and COO . "We need the diversification.

"Hobbies and crafts are almost synonymous. Males do one and females do another. When a male does something with his hands, it's a hobby. When a woman does something with her hands, it's a craft. We're trying to broaden our base." Marcia Greinier, who formerly owned her own craft company, will head up product development for the Style Studios line, Foster said. The new crafts will not affect the model line, Foster said. "That's our core base. That's a whole different ballgame."

1/72 B-1B Lancer

Capable of sustained supersonic flight at treetop levels, the B-1B Lancer relies less on stealth and more on raw speed to reach its targets and evade interception. Who's Your "Daddy"?

COMBINING A LOVE FOR custom street machines with pop art imagery, Ed "Big Daddy"Roth remains the hot rod world's equivalent of Dr. Frankenstein. Part mechanic, part tortured artist, Big Daddy first gained notoriety in the late '50s by more or less sculpting completely original hot rods from junkyard parts and generous amounts of fiber-glass.

The first of these was the now famous "Outlaw." As innovative as these designs were though, they weren't what ultimately gained him fame and fortune.To finance his projects, Ed sold airbrushed T-shirts at drag strips and car shows that featured wild-eyed monsters behind the wheels of outrageously proportioned hot rods.

The most popular of these ghoulish characters, and the one that ultimately put Big Daddy on the map, was the Rat Fink. By 1963 mass produced "Finkie" T-shirts and model kits were everywhere.

Other crazy characters fol-lowed, such as "Drag Nut,""Mother's Wor r y, " and "Mr. Gasser." Most re-cently these characters have found new life in the world of rock art. 1/24 2001 NASCAR Goodwrench Kits

These two kits are sure to be among the most sought after subjects among NASCAR fans this year.
