Historic Planes from the '40s - - due December, 2004
The Berlin Airlift Set honors those who flew an served during The Berlin Blackade and Airlift, from 1948 through 1949. Many believe it was freedom's finest hour and certainly defined the beginning of the Cold War.
The set features three of the workhorses: the C-47, C-54 and C-97. A specially designed, limited edition decal sheet offer a variety of liveries used on the airlift to commemorate the planes that came from all over the work to save Berlin.
A pamphlet explains the blockade and includes personal stories from men who flew the mission. A special limited edition copy of the poem "High
Flight" is superimposed over images of Templehof Airport.
Twenty-First Century Jets
BOEING'S MAMMOTH 777-200 IS nothing short of a technological marvel. It is the first airliner to be 100% designed by computers using 3-D solids technology. This eliminated the need to build an expensive full-scale mockup and allowed engineers to completely "preassemble" the massive aircraft for parts fit on computers before they began the actual production.
The technology that makes the 777-200 fly is no less impressive. Powered by two enormous turbofans producing about 77,000 pounds of thrust apiece, the Boeing can climb as high as 43,000 feet. The 777-200 will whisk 328 passengers and their luggage at about 560 mph (or roughly 85% of the speed of sound) from Chicago to Honolulu non-stop-- not bad for an aircraft that weighs a whopping 270 tons when fully loaded for takeoff.
Pick your powerplant
Minicraft now offers a beautifully detailed 1/144 replica of the 777-200 in three major airline liveries, each with a different engine variant. There is an American Airlines version with Rolls Royce engines, a Continental Airlines version with General Electric powerplants, and a United version that features Pratt & Whitney engines. Each is modeled in colors that make it easy to paint and decorate the model in the chosen airline's paint scheme.
Minicraft is one of only a few model manufacturers that offers a wide range of 1/44 scale commercial jet models, so they have had a lot of practice perfecting the genre. From what we can see, the level of detail and different engine variants and liveries will make these 777-200 kits very attractive to any fan of commercial aviation subjects. Look for the Continental to land on dealers' shelves in early September, with the others to follow.

Fly the Friendly Skies: 1/144 MD80
THE DOUGLAS DC-3 WAS introduced in 1936, and airliners boomed with popularity. Due to safety precautions and the increasing need for passenger space, the DC-3 went through modification after modification until it finally emerged as the MD-80 in 1982. Since then, Trans World Airlines has boosted its success by picking up the model in 1998, and over 1,100 MD-80s have been produced worldwide. MiniCraft Models now offers this airliner giant in a not so giant scale. Their 1/144 scale MD-80 is not only a unique kit, but it was also the model "kit of the year" by Squadron/Signal. Detailed twin jet engines, landing gears, and panel lines make this a treat for airliner enthusiasts. The boarding doors and emergency exit doors are even detailed! Only six paints are needed, but the modeler will want to use tape to spray the detail on this beauty.
To finish it off, MiniCraft has included some excellent decals. Two decals are applied to each side, detailing the individual windows and doors and sporting the famous Trans World Airline insignia. Other decals include the cockpit windows and "TWA" initials with an American flag for the tail. When the modeler seesthis kit, there will be no wonder why Squadron/Signal has called this the "kit of the year!"
Classic Military Propliners: C121J & C118A
Two of MiniCraft's newest propliners are military cargo versions of two commercial aviation classics. The venerable Blue Angel C-121J, which was a cargo version of a Lockheed Super-G Constellation, provided the Blue Angels transportation between show sites for the maintenance and support troops throughout the 1970s.
The C-118A was a modified version of the civilian DC-6A that was chosen by the Air Force as the aerial transport for President Truman in 1947. MiniCraft airliner models are molded in white or silver. The Scalemaster decals included with each kit now include optional windshield decals for those who prefer the decals to clear windows.
