Atlas' 2-bay hoppers offer economic way to transport coal

Atlas is adding 2-bay offset side hoppers with round ends to their HO-scale Trainman line of economically priced cars. These ready-to-run models are designed to help new modelers and those with a limited budget quickly build up a fleet of quality, detailed rolling stock without severely emptying their pocketbooks.

The new 2-bay offset side hoppers with round ends are modeled after the open hoppers that were built in the 1930s and the 1940s to transport coal. Each of the models feature blackened metal wheels, free-rolling 50 ton trucks, detailed brake gear, body mounted AccuMate knuckle couplers, and prototypical painting and lettering.

Initial roadnames will be available in two roadnumbers for the following: C&O, Clinchfield, Montour, and nickel Plate. The hoppers are all painted black with white lettering. An undecorated car will also be available. The 2-bay offset side hoppers with round ends are scheduled to begin shipping in June.

Atlas Unveils New HO scale "Trainman" line in Cincinnati

Atlas announced its new Trainman line in HO and O scale, a completely new category of affordable, scale locomotives and rolling stock, designed for compatibility with existing layouts. Fully assembled and ready-to-run, these units are built for dependability and hours of smooth, reliable performance.

"The evolution and development of the Trainman lines dates back 25 years [to Atlas Tool Co. Inc. founder Steve Schaffan]," said Atlas Chairman Thomas W Haedrick. "Over the past 20 years, maintaining such high production standards has become an expensive proposition, for both Atlas and consumers. During the last few years, an important question became..."What about all the other modelers out there who know the Atlas name, but can't afford, or don't want to spend their hard earned dollars on high end locomotives or rolling stock?" Equally important is the question that goes to the heart of continuing the healthy development of model railroading in the United States, "What about new individuals who want to enter into the hobby of model railroading, but can't or don't want to spend at typical high end prices?" These are the individuals the Atlas Trainman lines have been developed for. Whether it's N, HO, or O, the Atlas Trainman lines represent Atlas' attempt to more widely assure model railroading fun for everyone."

Haedrich went on to assure modelers that the Master Series line will be continued and will be the mainstay of their development efforts, and that though more economically priced, the Trainman line "will retain the same standards of quality model building and prototypical realism as the Master Series."

The new HO-scale Trainman line will begin shipping this fall. Premiering next will be the Atlas HO Trainman line, which was unveiled at the NMRA Convention in Cincinnati. The first releases will be available in Fall/Winter 2005/06. That will be followed by the Atlas N Trainman line in 2006. All current details, FAQ's,and the latest Trainman product information can be found online.

Atlas Trainman products, the end result of many hours of painstaking research, design, and development by the innovative minds at Atlas, combine handsome new paint schemes with state-of-the-art detailing and construction. Added details include true-scale dimensions, accurate details, finely molded parts, and weighted, detailed underframes. All Atlas Trainman locomotives and rolling stock are equipped with AccuMate Knuckle Couplers.

MP15 due in October

Fans of the SW1500 & MP15 series who have had to endure "ersatz" modern switchers in the form of SW7's or other earlier types being called SW1500s no longer need to.

Altas has announced the first one due out in October is the MP15DC. For those who model on a New Orleans theme, this is significant in that the MP15 was, and still is on the CSXT, quite common in this area. The L&N, Southern, SP and later the NS all had MP15s locally, in one version or the other. I'm not sure, but the MP and UP may have also. The switchers that worked the New Orleans area became fixtures, as they usually stayed for many years.

Atlas plans on releasing the MP15DC in the three different styles of long hood that were common to the MP15DC throughout production: standard hood, hood with square air filter box and hood with angled air filter box (the air filter box is located in the area immediately ahead of the cab). In addition, various styles of hood and cab-end sand boxes are being offered. Exhaust stacks -- both with and without mufflers will be featured.

Scheduled for October release, this will be the most detailed plastic switcher model ever offered in N scale. With multiple version and variations in root detail, sand hatch and pilot detail ... Atlas has spared no expense on this one.

Each road name will have two (2) numbers and one un-numbered in DCC & non-DCC. Besides two undecorated versions, the other road names are:
CNW
CSXT
Genesee & Wyoming
Missouri Pacific (UP colors)
Reading
Southern
Southern Pacific

Atlas' new HO Code 83 Number 8 turnout

Atlas Model Railroad Co., Inc. has made available to modelers in HO scale a Number 8 turnout in its Mark IV line of Code 83 track products. The higher the number of a switch (turnout) the longer and more gradual it is. The Number 8 is, in model railroad terms, a very long switch and should support trains with very long cars and at very high speeds.

The switch is made using diecast points, frog, and guard rails. The diecast frog is insulated, but can be powered using an easy-access terminal ring outside the guard rail of the straight leg of the switch. Use of the Atlas Snap Relay is just one method of powering the frog. While most locomotives can span the length of the frog and would not need to have a powered frog, short electrical wheelbase locos may benefit. Both left-hand and right-hand turnouts are available for a suggested retail price of $12.95 each.

A Fresh Look at an Old Favorite

by Bob Hayden

As the race to pack more horsepower into six-axle road units heated up in the 1960s, General Motors' Electro Motive Division added the SD35 to its catalog. EMD built 360 of the 2,500-horsepower model from 1964 to 1966. All the SD35s were delivered with dynamic brakes.

The SD35 and contemporary GP35-the " 35-line" models-changed the styling of hood units and introduced the basic look of EMD power for the next 20 years. Gone were the curved cab roofs, replaced by flat, angled cab roofs and boxy hoods. SD35 production came to an end in 1966 when the unit was replaced with the 3000-horsepower SD40, and the horsepower race motored on.

New Tooling, New Paint Schemes

These new SD35s and SDP35s in HO, match the quality of recent Atlas HO offerings. Under the hoods you'll find a die-cast underframe and a five-pole skewed-armature motor with dual flywheels. All units come equipped with the Atlas Dual-Mode Decoder, which permits operation with either analog (conventional control) or NMRA-standard DCC Systems. Change over is accomplished by removing a jumper plug under the body shell and replacing it in different holes. The models feature directional lighting and come with factory-installed AccuMate knuckle couplers. Weighing in at just over a pound, the mechanism should be powerful and sure-footed.

Details, Details, Details

The molded cab and hoods are crisply done, with separately installed scale windshield wipers, metal grab irons, and fine-scale handrails. Marker lights feature separate lenses, and you'll find scale fans and grille detail on the hoods. There's detail inside the cab, too, including crew figures. Optional details include a snowplow' and flat or raised "dust bin," as appropriate to the prototype.

Most SD35s and SDP35s ran up huge mileage totals and have been retired. That doesn't mean they can't live on in HO scale on diesel-era layouts!

Atlas Commander Software Upgrade

Atlas is giving owners of the Atlas Commander (ATL330) the opportunity to upgrade the unit to include consisting and functions 3 & 4. The upgrade consists

of replacing two microchips and can be accomplished one of two ways:

• The customer sends the unit into Atlas for the upgrade. The cost is $20 plus $3 shipping and handling. This would be the preferred method, as it does not void the Commander's warranty.

• Atlas sends the microchips and the customer installs them. There is a $10 cost for each chip, as well as a $2 shipping and handling charge. Due to Atlas' inability to monitor the installation process, this method voids the original Commander warranty.

If a customer needs to upgrade, however, all upgrade requests need to be sent in writing directly to Atlas at:

All requests need to include customer name, address, phone number, and e-mail address if available. For more information about this upgrade offer, visit the Atlas Web site at www atlasrr.com.

100 Tons of Raw Power: New Roadnames for Atlas HO Alco S2 and S4 Switchers

by Bob Hayden

Many of the successful early diesels were switchers, and experiments to mount a diesel engine on a locomotive frame to drive electric traction motors dated back the 1920s. Alco rolled out two "catalog model" switchers in April 1940: the S 1 was a non-turbo charged 660-hp unit and the top-of-the-line unit was the 1,000-hp S2. Weighing in at just over 100 tons, the S2 was powered by a turbo charged six cylinder Alco 539 engine. In the next decade Alco produced more than 1,500 S2s, making the model the company's all-time top seller. In 1950 production was switched over to the S4; almost 800 were built before another model change in 1961. Switchers operate at low speeds and don't run up the miles like road locomotives, so they usually last a long time. With service lives approaching or exceeding 50 years, a handful of S2s and S4s are still operating today mostly on short lines, industrial railroads, or tourist operations.

Same running quality and detail, new paint and printing

The Atlas HO S2 and S4 are back wearing crisp and intricate paint schemes for roads not previously offered. The mechanism is the same one used in earlier production runs, with a heavy die-cast frame, die-cast gear cases, five-pole skewed-armature motor, and dual flywheels. It operates smoothly over a wide range of speeds.

The S2 models wear Alco Blunt trucks, while the S4s mount AAR Type-A switcher trucks-the only major external difference between the two prototypes. Both come factory equipped with AccuMate knuckle couplers The S2 schemes feature Atlantic Coast Line's purple and gray with yellow striping (an early three color Amtrak scheme/, Canadian National orange on black, Great Northern's green-and-orange Empire Builder scheme, and a crisp black-and white Lehigh and New England livery. New paint on the S4s includes a classic green-and-yellow Central Vermont design and Milwaukee Road's familiar orange-and-black scheme. Given that their prototypes answered the call to duty for 50 years and more, these Alcos are going to show up on a lot HO railroads.

Torpedo Boat N-Scale GP7s

By Bob Hayden

Railroaders called them "Torpedo Boats" because the long cylindrical air tanks mounted atop their hoods looked like the launch tubes on-you guessed it-World War II PT boats. The distinctive look was born when EMD relocated the air reservoirs from the frame to the roof to make room for extra-large fuel and water tanks, usually on locomotives intended for passenger service. Because there were so many GP7s (over 2, 700 of them were built between 1949 and 1954), there were numerous roads that rostered the torpedo-boat version. In a release scheduled for February 2002, Atlas is offering seven new paint schemes on both its Phase I and Phase II N-scale GP7s.

Tubes on the roof; great paint jobs

The models will feature all the details that make a torpedo boat what it is: roof-mounted air tanks, steam generator detail on top of the short hood, high-capacity fuel tanks, and water-fill details on side sill. Under the hoods and "torpedo tubes" you'll find Atlas' smooth-running, low-friction mechanism with dual-flywheels and five-pole, skew-wound armature motor. The units ride on EMD Blomberg trucks with blackened wheels. Bodymounted AccuMate® magnetic knuckle couplers are standard, as is directional lighting with white LEDs.

Eye-catching is the only way to describe the new paint schemes. There are seven of them, and from Santa Fe's Zebra Stripes to Rock Island's "Route of the Rockets" four-band red, black, and white livery, every one of them is a masterpiece of intricacy. Each color scheme is offered in two numbers plus an unnumbered version, and there's also an undecorated model for each Phase variant.

Your layout may not have any ships that need sinking, but if your modeling tastes include first-generation diesels, you may want to add several Atlas torpedo boats to your fleet!

N-Scale Dash 8-40B from Atlas

The Dash 8-40B is a very large locomotive that almost every modern day railfan can identify. It has very unique radiator grilles and dynamic brake configurations. Atlas has already produced this model in HO, and now N-scalers won't have to wait very long for their very own model. The N-scale version of the Dash 8-40B will include many of the same features as its HO cousin, such as directional lighting, painted safety rails, blackened metal wheels, and white LED headlights.

Even the motor has been reworked to provide improved slow-speed performance that is closer to scale speeds. The N Dash 8-40B from Atlas will be available in nine different roadnames, as well as with or without a Lenz DCC decoder.

Plug. Play, and Walk Around: Atlas Master DCC Hand Command

by Bob Hayden

Ease of installation and ease of use were the watchwords when Atlas introduced their Master DCC System last year, and the system made good on the promise "to make DCC simple." About the only important functionality missing from the initial release was a hand-held, walk around throttle. Atlas promised one was on the way... and it's finally arrived!

The latest addition to the Master DCC System is the HandCommand--a compact portable throttle designed to increase the enjoyment of the systemby allowing the operator to stay close to their train.

One knob,eight buttons ...

Measuring 6 inches long and weighing a feather-light 4.3 ounces, the new unit adds walk around capability to the Atlas Commander and will work with any other DCC system that supports Xpress Net technology. All components are designed to conform to NMRA standards and recommended practices for DCC.

Equipped with its own LED screen, the Hand Command has all the functionality of the Atlas Commander, except for the ability to program decoders. The walk around unit must be connected to a Commander or other command station; it cannot function independently.

The design of the unit allows for one-handed control, and traditionalists will be relieved to see a knob for speed control. What's more, unlike all those TV and VCR remotes in your living room, this controller doesn't require a battery!

The Hand Command can control up to five decoder functions (this depends on the capability of the decoder), and its stack function allows for simple recall of up to eight engines. It can control up to 99 locomotives and accessories and includes multiple-unit consist setup functionality (if consisting is supported by the command station).

...and all the hardware to install it

Unlike most electronic and computer gear, the Hand Command comes complete with the hardware you'll need to install it. Each unit is packaged with a Universal Panel Connector (UPC), which features an LED track-status indicator, two DIN jacks for the controller, and one modular jack.

Also included is a 7-foot wire (with 6-pin modular connectors) to connect the UPC to the command station and a 6-foot coiled cord that links the HandCommand to the panel. It's the one you disconnect to move from panel to panel around your layout. Finally, there are even wood screws to attach the UPC to the layout.

All components of the Master DCC system carry one-year limited warranties and are backed by Atlas's unconditional support. This includes dedicated in-house DCC staff whom you can call, e-mail, or fax to answer your questions and provide assistance. Technical information, including questions and answers, is already available on the Internet at www.atlasrr.com.

New Paint Schemes for a Classic: Atlas Brings Back N-Scale SD60

by Bob Hayden

As the race to increase the amount of horsepower per locomotive escalated in the early 1980s, Electro-Motive had to introduce a new diesel prime mover for its top-of-the- line six-axle road switcher. The first model to use the new 710G engine was the SD60. The 3,800-hp unit caught on, and EMD built over 1,000 of them well into the 1990s. About half the production, most of it in the early years of the model, came equipped with a standard EMD cab and short hood. However, beginning in 1989, most buyers opted for the wide North American safety cab. Units with the wide cab are designated SD60M.

Most of the SD60s and SD60Ms built are still in service. They're no longer the horsepower champs--that honor goes to units that exceed the 6,000-hp mark--but they are a main-stay of the motive power fleets of the big railroads that operate them.

New paint outside;Lenz inside

Atlas first introduced their SD60 in 1998, and the latest production run brings a host of new color schemes and numbers. The new models will be offered in two electrical flavors: one with a factory-installed Lenz decoder, the other with a PC board designed for easy conversion to DCC. Like the earlier runs, the new SD60s will feature all three prototype cab outlines: the lowhood SD60 cab and 2- and 3-panel windshield variations on the wide-nose SD60M.

A snowplow and winterization hatch are provided separately as modeler-installed options. Most of what's under the hood hasn't changed because it didn't need to. Drive is a familiar dual-flywheel-equipped 5-pole skewed-armature motor and low-friction mechanism with blackened wheels. Directional lighting is standard, as are full pilots with body-mounted AccuMate magnetic knuckle couplers.

The new color schemes include two numbers each and unnumbered units for six of the big roads that own SD60s and SD60Ms. There's also an undecorated unit for each of the three cab styles. Undecorated and unnumbered units are not available with the factory-installed Lenz decoder option.

Atlas Has You Covered

ACF 4650 Center Flow 3-Bay Hopper

by Bob Hayden

AMERICAN CAR & FOUNDRY (ACF) produced more than 20,000 of these 100-ton, 4650-cubic foot 3-bay covered hopper cars from the 1960s through the 1980s. Big, modern freight cars, they measure slightly over 51 feet long, and they hold a lot of whatever they carry. Most of those 20,000 cars built are still in service, and you'll find them everywhere hauling kaolin (clay), grain, limestone, fertilizers, soda ash, salt, sugar, and other free-flowing bulk commodities. A few have been used for plastic pellets, probably including the kind used to injection-mold the new Atlas models of them!

All-new cars for HO: two body variations

Atlas's new ACF hoppers come in two major body variations with numerous smaller detail changes. This is due to a design change in 1971. Pre-1971 cars have a horizontal stiffening rib about a third of the way down the car side and 13 roof walk supports. With few exceptions, cars built after 1971 have nine roof walk

supports, plus a corrugated side stiffener. The cars were built with low brake

wheels from 1966 to 1971. Both variations feature see-through etched-metal roof walks, detailed brake gear with scale piping, body-mounted AccuMate knuckle

couplers in screw-attached coupler pockets, and 100-ton roller-bearing trucks with blackened metal wheels. The cars weigh in at 5.5 ounces. Loading hatches vary according to the date built and specific prototype being modeled. There are three hatch types: 30-inch round, three-piece elongated, and four-piece continuous.

The models also come with two different outlet arrangements, either straight gravity or gravity/pneumatic-assist offloading. The initial release in April features paint schemes for six railroads and one private owner, plus pre- and post-1971 undecorated models. All decorated cars come in two road numbers for each roadname

ACF 23,500-GallonTank Cars in HO

Atlas Offers Second Run and Adds New Roadnames

by Bob Hayden

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN A FREIGHT car is so popular that the first production run just about disappears? Make more, of course--and add some new paint jobs while you're at it! Atlas's first run of the ACF 23,500-Gallon Tank car fits that bill-- the first run was a big hit, and there weren't enough to meet the demand. So this summer brings two new batches of these ready-to-run cars: re-releases of six of the original road-names and three new models.

"Straight-barrel "cars

American Car & Foundry produced hundreds of these insulated general-service

tank cars from 1967 to 1990. This is a 55-foot, domeless, non-pressure car with a steel or aluminum welded tank, exterior heating coils, and 100-ton trucks. Dubbed a "straight-barrel" design because of the lack of visible slopes in the tank bottom, these frameless, single-compartment cars are used to ship a wide range of commodities, from asphalt to vegetable oil. Tank cars last a long time, and you can bet that most of them are still rolling. The models consist of model plastic tank shells with separate ends, ladders, and platforms. A bottom casting comprises the stub sills and end platforms, and two flat steel weights are screwed to it. Brake components and piping, bottom outlet, and placard boards

are separately applied parts, and the railings and side safety bars are wire.

Upgraded tooling too!

Atlas has upgraded the tooling for the main tank shell. The original run had pronounced ribs on the tank body; these have been corrected to better replicate the subtle ribs on the proto-type cars. Mechanically, the model rides on the correct 100-ton roller-bearing trucks, with 36"-diameter metal wheelsets. AccuMate knuckle couplers come installed, and horn-hook couplers are provided separately. The car weighs 4.8 ounces.

Pressureaide Air-Assisted hoppers

By Boy Hayden

MOVING HUGE QUANTITIES OF bulk materials is what railroads do best, and an important part of the process is getting those materials in and out of the cars. Fine, dry powders present problems because they clump together rather than tumble out the bottom of a hopper. One solution when gravity alone won't do the job is to introduce low-pressure air through fabric membranes to fluidize the powder. The air supply is at the delivery site, but the car has to be equipped with piping and membranes. The industry jargon for such a car is an "air-assisted hopper. From 1982 to 1995 American Car & Foundry produced almost 3,000 Pressureaide air-assisted hoppers. These cars efficiently carry and unload commodities like flour, sugar, talc, lime, gypsum, clay, soda ash, and dry chemicals. In addition to their four-hopper compartments and unloading mechanisms, they have weather-tight hatches to protect product purity.

Big cars in N-scale and HO ACF Pressureaide Center-Flow Hoppers are big, modern freight cars, almost 60-feet long over the coupler faces and capable of carrying as much as 5,000-cubic feet of material. Atlas now offers N-scale and HO models Features common to models in both scales include see-through etched metal roof walks, detailed brake gear with scale piping, AccuMate Knuckle couplers, and 100-ton roller-bearing trucks. The HO cars have blackened metal wheels. The initial release features paint schemes for six private owners and one railroad (Soo Line), plus a colorful ACF demonstrator and an undecorated version. All decorated cars come in two road numbers for each road-name. Although the models won't have to load or off-load anything, they're just the thing to fill out those long, modern trains. N-Scale HO

N-Scale Roundhouse: Earlier this year HO modelers were treated to a very nice model of a steam era roundhouse from Atlas. This time it's the N modeler's turn. The structure is based upon the popular HO version with the pieces being molded in appropriate colors. Adding more of the roundhouse kits can easily expand the original 3-stall structure. Atlas has also made the new Roundhouse compatible with the N-scale turntable.
