According to the company, these I large 11 inch x 14 inch sheets avoid unsightly seams on large projects and, unlike vinyl and acrylic, are easily applied with commonly found glues and liquid cement. There are two sheets included in each package for $19.95. Each package includes instructions with color photos and illustrations.

Red Ball Announces New LTD Kit Series
Red Ball, a division of Model Railroad Warehouse, unveiled a new line of kits at the NMRA Convention in Cincinnati. The LTD kit concept was introduced this spring with their Baldwin Westinghouse Class B steeple cab kit which is now taking reservations for a third run. According to the company, a variety of LTD models are in preparation for continuing availability in multiple scales - but in custom produced small batches. Although photo-etched metal is predominant in their design, the kits are designed for construction using common hand tools and modern adhesives.
One of the prototypes to be displayed is the forthcoming "Cincinnatian" passenger train the B&O operated behind specially streamlined "President Class" 4-6-2 locomotives in the postwar era. The road's own shops modified heavyweight passenger cars into "pseudo streamliners" often called "modernized" or "betterment" cars.
The Red Ball model cars feature double etched nickel silver car sides with prototypically raised lettering and car names to permit capturing the at deco features of the original "streamliner" or its later "skirtless" version. Traditional kit construction techniques using properly contoured wood roof, plastic floor, and correct detail parts are part of the product design. The first run of Cincinnatian kits will be produced this fall to fill firm reservations received by August 1. A conversion kit for Cincinnatian streamlining of the Mantua 4-6-2 is also being scheduled by Red Ball.
'Monsters Menace America': New Board Game From Avalon Hill
Wizards of the Coast has announced the release of Monsters Menace America, a B-Movie "monster mash" of a board game in which players control kaiju-like mutated monsters who stomp, burn and bash their way across North America in an attempt to become the "King of the Monsters." Released under WotC's Avalon Hill imprint, Monsters Menace America (msrp $45) is a lavishly produced board game suitable for two to four players, ages 12 and older.
In addition to a giant full color game board, six monsters, six monster record tiles, 42 military units, 2 military record tiles, 16 military research cards, 16 monster mutation cards, and 23 stomp markers, the game includes three dice and 15 plastic sliders.
The six monsters whose designs reflect classic monster movies such as King Kong ("Konk"), Godzilla ("Tomanagi"), The Deadly Mantis ("Gargantis") and Ultraman ("Megaclaw") are presented as colorful two-inch tall 3-D playing pieces that dwarf the National Guard's half-inch long tanks. Players guide their monsters across a game board that represents the U.S. crushing their least favorite American cities into oblivion, but if the health of a monster drops too low, it faces exile in Hollywood as a sad sideshow attraction.

Roco Declares Bankruptcy
Roco, a large Austrian model railroad-manufacturing firm with products in HO and N scales, has
declared bankruptcy. For many years Roco's main operations were in Salzburg, Austria, but it
recently moved its operations to a new factory in Hallein (in the Salzburg area, 370 employees).
Roco also has facilities in Gloggnitz, Austria (200 employees), and in Slovakia (230 employees).
The European train market has been in a slump since the German economy weakened, and several
of Roco's competitors are now offering lower-cost items made in China. The German train market
has declined from sales of 204 million Euros in 2002 to 181 million in 2004. Germany is Roco's
largest market (approximately 65 percent of Roco's sales are in Germany). The firm, which according
to Austrian sources has debts of approximately 24 million Euros and losses of approximately 5
million Euros per year, will remain in operation under receivership. Leopold Heher will serve as
receiver. Employees have not been paid their wages for June or their vacation pay as of today, July
15. Substantial layoffs are expected as the firm reorganizes.

Star Wars 'Risk' Game Has a Twist
Hasbro's new Star Wars Risk: Unlike previous iterations of Risk where the object is total domination, the Star Wars version rewards virtue and altruism as well as aggression -- players can actually sacrifice themselves in hopes of providing an eventual victory for their side.
The new Star Wars Risk board game (srp $24.95), which has just been released to coincide with the May 19th opening of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, provided designers with some significant challenges since the movie ends with the destruction of the good guys (the Jedi Knights) and the triumph of the "Evil Empire." The designer's solution involved a revision of the gameplay in which certain cards (such as Jedi leader Mace Windu) give players the option to use an eight-sided die and hence role a higher score. Instead of conquering the 42 various portions of the earth depicted in the classic Risk game, players in the new Star Wars edition attempt to conquer the various planets and moons that play key roles in the George Lucas's Star Wars saga.
Bar Mills Devises New Wall System
Bar Mills has created a new way to make unique buildings without the extra effort of scratch building. The new "Wild Card" wall system lets modelers re-arrange the wall face on the front the structure, enabling the modeler to achieve a structure with a unique look without needing to have scratch-building skills. The Wild Card system is being introduced in Bar Mill's newest HO scale kit, "Phineas Clutter's Sign Shop/The Backshop. The structure is complete with metal castings, signs, fencing, and a complete instructional booklet. The diorama has an approximate footprint of 7 inches by 10 inches, the main building measures 2.5 inches by 7 inches. The kit (#0842) retails for $47.95.
Bar Mills has also announced a new line of pre-assembled billboards for N, HO, S, and O scales. Known as "Builts," the new series is available in two sizes: one for N through HO scale use and one for HO-S-O scale use, these billboards feature pre-weathered lettering, full-color graphics, and include names such as "Borden's Mills," "Speedy (AlkaSeltzer) Relief," "Sylvania," "Checker Cab," "Buster Brown Shoes," "Piels Beer," "Dutch Boy Paint," and "White Rose." The smaller size billboards retails for $11.95 each, the larger sizes retail for $13.95.
Kadee Announces Whisker Coupler
Products has announced the release of its new Whisker coupler (product number 148) while advising that production quantities will be limited at first until full facilities for manufacturing the coupler can be developed. In terms of shank length and performance, the coupler is operationally the same as the still-to-be-produced No. 5. General Manager Alan Vezzam stated that the Whisker coupler was being marketed to those who "appreciate the additional convenience."
This is the culmination in a design process which reaches back to around 1980 when it was felt there might be some additional marketing opportunities for couplers with their own built-in centering springs. Still, for technical and personnel reasons, the company chose to
mothball the project and only revived it recently. Drop-in plastic couplers have become popular because of their built-in plastic springs, but many model railroaders have been disappointed with the performance of plastic clone couplers. Temperature affects the reliability of operation and the plastic springs are prone to take a "set" so that the part is bent to one side or the other. This causes the coupler to not couple well, and so Kadee has been bombarded with requests for an all-metal version. Metal springs are renowned for their tendency to return to the same position, despite adverse conditions. Installing such a spring would involve taking the venerable Kadee coupler and adding some sort of metal centering spring.

Battling Across the Ages - TriKing's 'Anachronism TCG'
TriKing Games (in conjunction with The History Channel) is releasing Anachronism a trading card game in which players pit warriors from different time periods and different cultures against each other in fascinating card-driven conflicts. The cultures featured in the first release include The Ancient Greeks, The Norse, the feudal Japanese, and the Romans. The first release includes 17 different numbers including the Achilles vs. Spartacus Starter Pack and 16 different Warrior Packs featuring famous warriors from the four cultures covered in the initial release. The Starter Pack includes 1 Achilles Warrior Card, 1 Spartacus Warrior Card, 8 support cards, dice, rules and a play-mat. Each Warrior Pack includes 1 Warrior Card and 4 Support Cards.
Unlike most trading card games there is no randomness in Anachronism and no ultra rare cards. The Warrior Packs come in pegged blister packs and customers can clearly see which warrior they are buying. The four Support Cards accompanying every Warrior serve several functions -- they can increase the Warrior's abilities, provide protection, and create overwhelming combinations to use against an opponent.
Triking has created The Anachronism War College -- a worldwide organized play program for the new TCG. Retailers can sign up online at the TriKing Games Website and earn access to special promotional cards available only to players who participate in organized play events. TriKing is launching Anachronism in the hobby and then moving into various educational channels -- no retail chains are involved at this time.
American Models Builders Releases new Rail-Marine Series
A new series of Rail-Marine HO scale kits has been released from American Model Builders, the manufactures of LaserKit. The covered barge was the Rail-Marine equivalent of the railroad boxcar. Many of the United States' "Eastern" Railroads maintained huge "Railroad Navies." The NYC, PRR, LU, CNJ, Erie, DL&W, NH, and others all had a variety of craft on their rosters: everything from railroad harbor tugboats, to stick lighters, scows, floating livestock "yards," station floats, car floats, and ferries. There were even floating grain elevators, which to the inexperienced are some of the most ungainly watercraft imaginable. Many of these barges roamed the Northern East Coast, from Maine, southward to the Carolinas, all carrying railroad freight. Large concentrations of activity could be found in Portland, Maine and Philadelphia, with the biggest operation centered around New York City. Railroad tugs pushed, pulled, and maneuvered all these craft from the piers of New York and New Jersey up the Hudson River. The historical records of tonnage moved by the Rail-Marine craft are astonishing. In most cases, this "tonnage" was called "lighterage" by the rail-marine folks. Lighterage was, simply put, just about anything the railroad navies hauled from one freight dock to another. Many times barges and stick lighters were tied up alongside ocean going ships in order to load the lighterage on board, often, as the ship was imminently ready to sail. Freight was transported this way from the late 1800s up until the 1960s.
The first kit, a Bump End Barge, is considered to be a "typical" covered barge. Almost all of the Rail-Marine craft had a "Captain's Cabin," usually located at the stern of the craft. This cabin was often nothing more than a small room with a stove, small cupboard, and a piece of furniture that resembled a bed. There were Captains, however, that apparently did have their wife and children reside on-board. Some barges had the cabin built into the main "house"; others had the cabins on the barge's roof, while this type of barge's cabin projected out from the stern end of the house. Some folks referred to this configuration as a "Bump End" barge.
The kit features quality laser-cut wood parts that utilize American Model Builders' Tab and Slot and Peel and Stick construction techniques. The 15-inch long marine craft is fitted with a waterline hull, custom scribed plywood deck, and basswood superstructure with open interior. Numerous resin and white metal detail parts are also included as are sliding shutters on the cabin windows, positionable freight doors, and opening rooftop loading hatches. A twenty page, fully illustrated instruction booklet accompanies the kit offering a step-by-step guide for assembling and finishing the Bump End Barge. The barge (#8000) retails for $119.95.

Westerfield Releases new Fishbelly Side Sill Boxcar Kits
Westerfield previously issued a complete series of fishbelly kits built for New Haven. The Pressed Steel Car Co. cars of 1902 were duplicated for the Butte Anaconda and Pacific Railway in 1903 as series 20-118 (even numbers only). The cars were used in moving equipment between the copper mine at Butte and the smelter at Anaconda. Since they retained their original trucks throughout their lives, the cars would have been banned from interchange aftr 1938. This probably contributed to their longevity since the cars were still on the railroad in 1982. The cars were given safety appliances in the early 1920s and AB brakes in the 1940s but otherwise remained unchanged.
Westerfield's two kits cover the life of the car and feature one-piece bodies. Decals cover all know
styles plus extra lettering to cover intermediate periods for which photos are unavailable. Also
included are warning placards used on the cars when hauling oil and explosives. The 36-foot
fishbelly boxcar is available in it original Butee Anaconda & Pacific form or as the modernized
version.
