Angelray Books to Distribute Photosniper
We would like to introduce PHOTOSNIPER, a new series of books from Kagero Publishing of Poland covering the armored vehicles of the Wehrmacht in World War II. This series has been designed specifically for the modeller and armor enthusiast, and each volume is devoted to a particular model of vehicle or subject - i.e. the Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. L/M or Panzer camouflage schemes - in order to provide the most in-depth coverage possible.
Each volume contains a short but detailed text description of the vehicle's design, construction and production history, and numerous color photographs of existing examples of the vehicle (from museums worldwide), including many close-up shots from different angles, as well as black & white period photographs of the vehicle in action.
Each volume also includes schematic scale drawings of the vehicle and its key components, color plates of the vehicle depicting different camouflage and tactical insignia combinations, expert tips & techniques for modelers, and a special bonus ABER photo-etched model accessory part or a TECHMOD decal set for use with models of that vehicle type. All text, including the photograph and illustration captions, is provided in both Polish and English.
The series currently covers armored vehicles of the Wehrmacht, but is expected to soon expand to include coverage of aircraft of the Luftwaffe. Currently available titles are:
Photosniper 5: Panzer Colors
Photosniper 6: Jagdpanzer IV L/48
Photosniper 7: Tiger II Ausf. B
Photosniper 8: Wespe
Photosniper 9: Flak auf Sd.Kfz. 7
Photosniper 10: Sturmtiger
Photosniper 11: Panther Ausf. A/G
MMP Buys the Gamers
Game company Multi-Man Publishing has purchased The Gamers, which is known for its WWII, American Civil War and Napoleonic tabletop war games. Those lines should fit well with MMP';s core product, Advanced Squad Leader, which boasts about 30 titles.
"It doubles our number of available titles and adds design and graphic-art talent to our staff," says MMP vice president Brian Youse. "It more than doubled our existing inventory. The Gamers were known for their quality."
Former Gamers owner Dean Essig will stay with MMP as an exclusive freelancer. However, none of the company's other employee will join MMP.
One of the MMP's co-owners is Curt Schilling, right-handed pitcher for the World Series Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. Youse says Schilling is pleased about picking up the Gamers, which had been in business for 13 years.
Great Planes Picks Up Aero Base
Great Planes Model Distributors, Champaign, Ill., has picked up exclusive-distribution rights for Aero Base, a Japanese firm with a slew of static model aircraft.
Parts for Aero Base models are photo etched on small sheets of brass, copper or nickel-silver. In addition to one-piece fuselages that bend into shape, wing ribs are simply turned with a tweezers to create a three-dimensional effect. Also included is a black display base with name plate.
Aero Base's 1:160 Micro Wing Series features plenty of antiquated aircraft that should be of interest to modelers, including the 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis and the Bleriot XI. Suggested retail prices range from $11.99-$45.99.
The Standard Series includes the 1:48 Fokker Dr.l, 1:48 1894 Lilienthal Glider and the 1:72 Spirit of St. Louis; suggested retail prices range from $69.99$129.99.
Also available is the 1:1,000 Graf Zeppelin LZ-127, which does not have a base, instead featuring a metal cradle. It retails for $119.99.
Chooch Makes Five New Loads
Chooch has just released five new HO loads that will be available this fall. Each load is prepainted and preweathered, so all the modeler has to do is pop it in the freight car. It just doesn't get much easier than that.
CCH7229 HO Wire Coil Load $5.99
CCH7230 HO Scrap Wheels Load $5.99
CCH7231 HO New Wheels Load $5.99
CCH7232 HO Heavy Equipment Load $.99
CCH7233 HO Heavy Scrap Load $5.99
Mantua Out Of Train Business
After 75 years of active leadership in the model-railroading industry, Mantua Industries, Woodbury Heights, NJ., is out of the train business.
Mantua stopped production of its entire train line - steam and diesel locomotives, rolling stock, train sets and limited-edition collector series - as of Oct. 8.
Co-founded by the John Tyler family, Mantua helped pioneer HO-scale trains as far back as the 1930s and was known for its quality, service and numerous innovations. Many individual components of its various engines are made of die-cast metal, and its original hefty die-cast steamers from the 1950s are among HO products that still show up at toy-train swap meets.
"Even more significant was the development of Mantua's HO ready-to-run division, dubbed Tyco [after the Tyler family name] in the 1950s," says Jim Riccioli, former associate editor with Collecting Toys magazine.
"That name eventually supplanted Mantua Metal Products' corporate identity. In 1970, Consolidated Foods bought Tyco Industries, which ended up becoming the third largest toy maker in the world (behind Mattel and Hasbro), before Mattel swallowed it up in 1998," Riccioli says. "I thought it was neat when the Tyler family purchased back the New Jersey plant and original tooling from Tyco in the late 1970s to again produce serious model railroading products as an independent company"
That tooling is now for sale. And the Tyler family's new business focus will be on producing its line of sporting goods for schools. The company is interviewing potential buyers for the model railroad tools.
Accurate Miniatures To Return?
Maybe Accurate Miniatures isn't gone after all.
Paul Bedford, former general manager of the Charlotte, N.C.-based model company that closed in June, said at the Chicago show that Accurate's owners came to an agreement with a group calling itself Hobby Investors LLC allowing that firm to buy all of what's left of Accurate, including its name and logo, inventory and rights to current projects. Bedford says the deal was part cash, part debt assumption.
Bedford added that Hobby Investors likely will start a new model company - which he referred to as the "new" Accurate Miniatures - that would make kits like the 1:48 Harrier that had been on the drawing board at the time the original Accurate folded.
Bedford says he will stay on as a consultant for Hobby Investors, which includes several members who work for a major tobacco company.
In late July, Italeri, Bologna, Italy, bought as much as 70% of Accurate's tooling.
Athearn Production Delays
We are sorry to inform you that due to production issues related to the vacuum plating of the Genesis ATSF F7 locomotives, we have postponed the delivery of these units until 2002. As we realize there is high demand for the Genesis ATSF Warbonnet scheme, we are expediting the production of the previously developed, but unannounced, ATSF F3 Warbonnet scheme. We have every expectation to deliver some, if not all, of the ATSF F3 Warbonnets before Christmas.
We regret the delay of the ATSF F7 Passenger units. We made the decision to stop production as the quality of the vacuum plating, utilized to replicate stainless steel, did not meet our quality standards. We are not willing to compromise on quality because it is exactly our dedication to quality that differentiates Athearn's Genesis Line from the competition. By accelerating the ATSF F3 Warbonnet production, we are providing model railroaders, collectors, and train enthusiasts the most prototypical ATSF Warbonnet model ever produced, and just in time for Christmas.
Playing Mantis Unveils New Products
Playing Mantis and Polar Lights unveiled several new products and releases for 2002, including three new kid-friendly licensed Snap Kits: the Jetsons' Spaceship, Ghostbusters' Ecto-1 and the DeLorean from `Back to the Future. "
First in production will be the Jetsons' Spaceship, which requires no gluing, has fewer than 30 pieces and includes five pre-painted figures and a clear stand.
But for plastic-model kit collectors of all ages, the big news at this booth was likely the Pro Collector Model Kit Box Protector.
So many collectors want to protect their valuable (and collectible) 1:24 and 1:25-scale model car kit boxes from dampness, wear and tear, and this will help.
These sturdy, clear-plastic Box Protectors are easy to use, snap shut and can be fastened in place with transparent tape or staples for added security.
They are stackable and displayable and have a suggested retail of only $1.89 each.
Airborne Introduces Panzer Grenadier
This October, Avalanche Press released an introductory level boxed set to its Panzer Grenadier wargame line.
It uses the same system as the full-fledged Panzer Grenadier, with introductory scenarios designed to ease the player into playing the full set quickly. The twenty scenarios included in the game pit American paratroopers against Germans during World War II, as well as battles of ascending levels of complexity and larger battles.
"Several scenarios tie in with historical events from World War II's Easy Company, as also depicted in the HBO miniseries, Band of Brothers, which provides a cross-marketing opportunity for retailers. This is probably the only such opportunity that will exist for us, as the battles are not fictionalized in the show," said Mike Bennighof, Avalanche Press general manager.
Titled Panzer Grenadier: Airborn, the introductory set includes an 11"x17" hardmounted map, 165 counters,
16-page rulebook, a 16-page scenario book, and four player aid cards, and retails at $29.95.

Decipher welcomes you to Middle-earth
Decipher recently announced firm plans for the release of the Lord of the Rings Adventure Game, the introductory level boxed set for the Lord of the Rings role-playing game. Scheduled for a December release, the Adventure Game is designed to provide a narrative, structured introduction to role-playing games through the use of the Through the Mines of Moria guided adventure.
"The Lord of the Rings Adventure Game is intended to help gaming novices and Tolkien fans who are not gamers become familiar with the world or role-laying games. It will also introduce experienced gamers to the Tolkien legacy." said Christian Moore, head of the Decipher Role-playing Games Studio.
The Lord of the Rings adventure Game box contains the 32-page Through the Mines of Moria adventure book, the Welcome to Middle-earth guidebook, a 24-page guide to the lands and peoples of Middle-earth, full-color character sheets, four full color tactical maps, cut-outs of the characters, and monsters in the adventure, and a poster map of Middle-earth.
The Fellowship of the Ring, the first movie in the trilogy, will release on December 19. The Adventure Game will be followed up with a 300-page, full color core game in February.
AFV Gun Truck
The majority of Gun Trucks used in Vietnam were based on the M54 5-Ton Truck. The early Trucks however were built on the M355 5-Ton Truck. One of the most colorful of these early Gun Trucks was NANCY, an M35 with the addition of the quad .50 cal mount taken directly from the WWII M16 Half Track. This will be the basis for a new kit from AFV Club.
Dragon Announces Panther "A"
Announced at the recent Tokyo Hobby Show, the Panther "A" has been one of those "Rumors" floating around the industry for the past year or so. Talk of a Panther "D" and a Bergepanther kit to follow have not been confirmed yet. Current rumors of a DML 251 are still circulating and are also unconfirmed.

Avalanche Press to Print to Order
Avalanche Press, known for it: award-winning war games and non trading card games, has announced an aggressive release schedule of historical and mythological-based d20 System products. Avalanche Press has already released its first three d20 System products, The Last Days of Constantinople; Greenland Saga: The Lost Norse Colony, and Ragnarok. Tales of the Norse Gods. Avalanche Press will continue its d20 System line of products with 48 and 64-page combined sourcebook/adventures, as well as a line of hardcover sourcebooks. Avalanche Press has also hired industry veteran John R. Phythyon Jr. as full-time editor and director of its d20 System line.
Unlike most other role-playing game manufacturers Avalanche Press will print its d20 System products to pre order levels, with a slight overage for immediate restock, and damages. Mike Bennighof, Avalanche Press president said, "We are printing very close to preorders because the fall-off in restocks on d20 System product is enormous. It's like nothing I've ever seen in this industry. d20 Systen products are not selling like games, they are selling like magazines. Retailers give them shelf space, then, when sold out, they are replaced with a different d20 System item. We will overprint a larger reserve for our hardcover books but definitely not as large a reserve as we would have before the d20 System glut hit this fall."
Bennighof blames the "just-in-time" system for many of the distribution problems experienced by retailers, distributors, and manufacturers. "As an industry we are not set up for just-in-time; that might work in heavy industry, in assembly-line manufacturing industries like the automobile and aircraft industries, but not in publishing." Bennigho: believes the just-in-time system places an onerous amount of risk in the hands of the manufacturer, who has to hole most of the inventory.
"We would be glad to print more if retailers and distributors would be more willing to share the risk. I have to mitigate the enormous risk that this would mean for us. We can sell our war games in other markets, allowing us to maintain a much higher stock level, but, not the role-playing games. This mitigation of risk is necessary in this environment. I would other wise be irresponsible to my employees' livelihoods."
Bennighof further went on to comment on the state of the war game division at Avalanche Press. "We had record direct sales this summer; as a company Avalanche Press is doing very well. Some distributors have done very well lately while others have had incredibly weak orders. The new edition of Third Reich will be allocated, with allocations being tied to sales of Imperium; this is not as a part of a print to order policy, but because it is an expensive game."
Forgotten Realms Developed for Television
Fireworks Television, a division of CanWest Entertainment (producers of the action adventure series Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda starring Kevin Sorbo, Relic Hunter starring Tia Camera, and the upcoming series Mutant X), has entered into a licensing agreement with Hasbro for the Forgotten Realms property, based on the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game by Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast subsidiary. Under terms of the agreement, Fireworks will develop a live-action television series based on the game setting and novels of Forgotten Realms. Wizards of the Coast and the Hasbro Properties Group will work with Fireworks to develop story lines for the television series.
Daniel Tibbets, Vice President of Fireworks Television, said "To work with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro on the development of this unique property with such a large and loyal following is a real opportunity for both our companies. Our production and distribution expertise to develop the TV series coupled with their intense knowledge of the story lines leaves no doubt that Forgotten Realms will be a special series."
"Forgotten Realms is a property that's rich with characters and dynamic settings," said Jane Ritson-Parsons, President of the Hasbro Properties Group. "Fireworks Studios has the expertise to develop a series that will capture the fantasy of Forgotten Realms and take the traditional roleplaying game to the next level."

Wiz kids Buy Battletech
•WizKids, Bellevue, Wash., which bought several game properties from FASA Corp. when that company ceased operation earlier this year, says it will launch a new version of the BattleTech miniatures game next summer. The game will be similar to WizKids' popular Mage Knight: Rebellion game, which uses painted miniatures with a statistics dial on the base.
WizKids' founder and CEO Jordan Weisman says the new game will be a "more sophisticated version of Mage Knight and feature figures with a Heat and a Combat Dial." Similarly, the new BattleTech will consist of starter sets with rules, dice, measuring tape and an undetermined amount of miniatures, and booster packs with only miniatures.
Weisman says the original BattleTech, released in the early 1980s, "was a quick beer-and-pretzels game we rushed to be out before Christmas." He thinks the new version "has an opportunity to be as big if not bigger. ..." The idea is to get new players involved fast, so a typical game likely will last less than two hours. "If we want to continue to be able to enjoy the world of BattleTech, we have to find ways to get new people into it," Weisman says, adding that Germany-based Fantasy Productions will publish sourcebooks for the original BattleTech setting and game system.
There will be support for the original BattleTech miniatures, he says, but it hasn't been determined how that will be done.
No Big Buzz at Gen Con
•Unlike the 2000 edition of GenCon, which saw the release of the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons by Wizards of the Coast, there was no single new game that had everyone talking. Even Wizards' new Harry Potter CCG was introduced with little fanfare, save the usual game demos in the company's massive castle booth. But there were trends, such as that represented by "The Lord of the Rings," thanks to the movie trilogy based on that J.R.R. Tolkein fantasy title.
The movie debuts Dec. 19 with "The Fellowship of the Ring." Two other films - "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King" - will be released in late 2002 and 2003. Decipher, Norfolk, Va., made the biggest splash with the property by introducing its new The Lord of the Rings CCG, which will release in November, and its RPG of the same name, which debuts early next year. The 330- to 350-total-card CCG kicks off with 50-card starter decks (No. 803, $10.99) and 11-card booster packs (No. 805, $3.29).
"It's been the culmination of a lot of work and lessons," says co-designer Tom Lischke. "It's been more fun than hard work. We found two or three core mechanics that we thought were new and innovative and we built the game around that." Lord of the Rings RPG designer and editor, Matt Colville, says the game will focus on the 70 years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
He adds that his development team was helped by the CCG being released first. "A lot of the art hurdles have been jumped," he says. "A lot of the approval issues, they have gone through." A Lord of the Rings introductory adventure game, geared to 13- to 15-year-olds, will be released in December and should help hype the RPG, Colville says. Over in the Games Workshop booth, the Glen Burnie, Md.-based company was touting its new The Lord of the Rings miniatures game, The Fellowship of the Ring edition, which will be released just before the movie.
Among the releases will be a starter box set ($39.99) containing a rulebook, dice, rulers, a modeling and
painting guide and plenty of miniatures. In addition to about 60 blister packs of figures to be released in the
first three months, 12 box sets featuring themes from movie scenes also will debut. Only figures that took part
in that particular scene will be included in a set. All the Lord of the Rings' products on the way from various
companies leaves Decipher's Colville with one conviction: "I think it's going to be the cultural phenomenon of
the next three years," he says. (As reported in Comics Retailer)

GenCon Sets Attendance Record
Though it lacked the big-release punch that characterized previous editions, GenCon Game Fair set an attendance record with its 2001 event Aug. 2-5 at the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee.
Attendance hit 25,280, up from 25,048 last year, says Dave Wilson, senior event manager for Wizards of the Coast Event Management, Renton, Wash. Wilson was happy with the showing, "considering the economy and the fact that there were no major releases like [Dungeons & Dragons] third edition we've got some exhibitors saying it was the best show to date."
There were no major problems, Wilson says, except for the usual troubles with hotel rooms in Milwaukee, most of which involved "lots of cancellations and misunderstandings" for show attendees.
"Everyone wants to be downtown and there are only 2,600 hotel rooms in the downtown area," Wilson says. By comparison, there are about 6,000 in Indianapolis, where GenCon moves to in 2003.
Wilson says Wizards worked with the Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau to block out roughly 7,000 hotel rooms in and around Milwaukee. But in 2002, "we're eliminating the convention and visitors bureau, because we find it's inefficient and too confusing," he says.
"Our show is unique. We're going to develop our own software, and we're going to do registration, events and
hotels through our e-commerce site," www.wizards.com/conventions.

Garden Railroad Association Forms
The Garden Trains Association has been formed by six leading manufacturers (Bachmann, LGB of America, Aristo-Craft, Hartland Locomotive Works, Märklin and Kalmbach Publishing), all founding members of the former Large Scale Model Railroad Association.
"Our main purpose is to share the fun," says Jerry Beck, executive director of the GTA. Besides "telling the world just how much fun can be had from getting involved in garden railroading," the non-profit organization's other main purpose is to encourage people to take up the hobby.
"Newcomers to large scale have come into the hobby for the sheer enjoyment of watching trains," Beck says. He adds that it is the fastest growing family hobby and has fostered about 100 garden railroad clubs from coast to coast.
The LSMRA, formed in 1998, also had a mission to increase public awareness, but membership was restricted to manufacturers. The GTA reaches out to all people with an interest in outdoor railroading, including railroad clubs, hobby dealers and smaller large-scale manufacturers.
"We are the AAA for garden railroading," Beck says. "We will not be out to put engines back on track, but we can provide support to make garden railroading year-round fun for everyone."
In addition, the group intends to go after the non-hobby market. "We are going after gardeners," Beck says. Plans are in the works to contact garden societies and put promotional ads on garden products, he says.
Folks can join the organization through GTA's Web site, www.gardentrains.org , and at trade and consumer shows.
"One of our goals is to have every hobby retailer sell membership to GTA in their stores," Beck says. He notes that with GTA memberships retailers "don't have to stock a thing, and for every $40 membership the dealer gets $5."
The membership package includes:
•One-year subscription to GTA's official publication, Garden Railways.
•The GTA's Annual Review of the year in garden trains.
•A quarterly newsletter.
•Garden railroad insurance to cover your railroad in case of disaster.
•Discounts and members-only products.
Testor Corp. Not For Sale
Talk during July's International Plastic Modeler's Society National Convention in Rosemont, Ill., was that The Testor Corp. was for sale by parent company RPM Inc., Medina, Ohio.
But according to RPM officials, the Rockford, Ill.-based maker of modeling finishes, adhesives, airbrushes and other hobby-related items is not on the block.
"There was mention of that, and we were considering marketing that business, but that's no longer the case," says RPM vice president of finance and communications Glenn R. Hasman. "We're a $2 billion company today and [Testor] is one of our smaller companies at this point. But they are a good company to us, and they are not currently being marketed."
But in these days of restlessness in the hobby industry, what if the right offer came along?
"Sure, we'd consider a good offer," Hasman says, adding that no such offer has surfaced. "Typically, those things don't come along unless you're trying to market that business."
The fact that RPM is $950 million in debt also has nothing to do with Testor, which Hasman says is profitable.
"We are active acquirers of complementary businesses, and the most recent sizable acquisition was DAP in
August 1999, which does caulks and sealants," Hasman says. "We are typically borrowing for those
acquisitions, and that's why the debt is where it is."

A View to a Thrill: Milton's Undersea Encounter Aquarium
Budding Jacque (and Jacqueline) Cousteaus can get their first taste of undersea exploration with Uncle Milton's exciting Undersea Encounter Aquarium. Combining a vibrant 3-D undersea environment with an innovative viewing scope, the Undersea Encounter gives kids ages 6 and up a "scuba diver" view of goldfish, guppies, and other small pet fish.
An underwater feeding dispenser draws fish right up to the front of the scope for thrilling face-to-fish encounters. The view scope can also be swiveled left and right, as well as moved up and down to follow fish as they swim around. The aquarium holds 1.5 gallons and is compact enough to fit on top of a dresser or a good-sized night stand.
Its colorful underwater environment features neat touches, such as simulated coral and kelp, in addition to a brilliantly rendered backdrop depicting thriving sea life. An optional air pump is available that aerates the water through a volcano in the tank, enhancing the undersea illusion.
Topping off the aquarium is a ventilated snap on lid with an ocean surface texture. For parents looking to give their child something other than another
video game or CD, we're sure you'll find the Undersea Encounter Acquarium from Uncle Milton to be a fantastic alternative.
Alpha Buys Revell-Monogram, Revell AG
Alpha International, the parent company of Gearbox Toys & Collectibles, announced it was buying plastic model kit giant Revell-Monogram and sister company Revell AG hours into the annual Chicago Hobby Show.
The announcement ends a year and a half of speculation about Morton Grove, Ill-based Revell-Monogram's futures. That firm, and Germany-based Revell AG, were previously owned by Binney & Smith , Easton, Pa. In addition to owning Gearbox, Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based Alpha also owns Empire Toy & Metalcraft. Gearbox makes die-cast collectibles, pedal cars and action figures: Empire Toy has Big Wheels and Grand Champions collectible horses among its product lines; Metalcraft makes stamped-steel collectibles.
"I'm very happy," says Jim Forster, who will remain president of Revell-Monogram, which will not change its name. "It's an excellent opportunity for Revell-Monogram to be purchased by a company with a need for manufacturing and engineering in the U.S."
Forster says the deal enables Revell-Monogram to acquire new tooling for plastic-model kits; Big Wheel production is expected to move to Morton Grove as well. New equipment and a boost in the 150-person workforce there could follow.
Alpha International Marketing director Jody Keender says distribution of Revell-Monogram products will move to Cedar Rapids within 60 days. He also expects Revell AG to eventually distribute products from Alpha's various brands in Europe.
Interactive CDs May Be Boon for Modelers
Static modelers tend to be history buffs. Give them a kit of their favorite car, truck, tank, aircraft or boat, and they more than likely will be able to bend your ear with plenty of inside info on the vehicle.
With the continuing explosion of interactive computer products, modelers now have more ways than ever to augment their knowledge. Thus, Absolute Air, Land & Sea's new interactive CDs of six renowned World War II-era vehicles - the Russian T-34, American M4 Sherman and German Tiger I tanks, and British Supermarine Spitfire, German Messerschmitt Bf 109 and American P-51 Mustang aircraft - should be a hit.
"There are hundreds and hundreds of images in there," says Absolute co-owner Alasdair Johnston, a former member of the British Army's Royal Engineers, whose company is located in Bristol, England. "You can't do that in a book."
The CDs, which were shown at the 2001 International Plastic Modeler's Society national convention in Rosemont, Ill., in July have enough features to satisfy even the most finicky modeler:
360-degree photographic panoramas.
Technical data files and illustrations.
Modern and archived footage, including actual combat film.
Camouflage and marking guides.
Development and service history.
Printable scale plans.
But that's just the beginning. Some of the best nuggets include the original archived order form from the German government for the first three Tiger I hulls, unit markings for the various vehicles and video narration.
"It took three years and a lot of investment," Johnston says, adding that the CDs were previewed at the 2000 IPMS national convention and officially released in April at Tamiyacon.
He and co-owners Paul Dickin, a British Broadcasting Co. cameraman, and Ted Fitzgerald, a film writer and British Military Vehicle Trust member, worked through various military museums around the world to create the CDs.
"I've got them all. Does that say enough?" says Bob Oehler, marketing manager for Tamiya America, the exclusive distributor in the U.S. and Canada for the products. "It's a good blend of historical footage and modern footage of the actual vehicles, and you get to hear things like the engine firing up on the T-34."
Johnston says several other CDs are in production; the German Tiger II and Panther tanks should be released before Christmas, while the American B-17 bomber and Focke-Wulf 190 will follow.
He adds the company offers several unique retailer programs, including providing free Web sites, videos of the introductions to all the CDs and a marketing packet that includes posters of the six titles.

Walthers Partners With Rivarossi
Wm. K. Walthers, Inc has formally announced its new partnership with world-renowned model railroad manufacturer Rivarossi. This exclusive new marketing and distribution arrangement brings tow leaders in the model railroad industry together, and brings new stability to the Rivarossi line of American locomotives and passenger cars.
Rivarossi, founded in 1946, has long produced a large selection of unique, detailed American steam locomotives in HO and N scales. Over the last few years, Rivarossi has acquired Lima, Jouef, Arnold, Pocher and Idee Commercialai.
Founded in 1932, Wm K. Walthers is a leading distributor of model railroad equipment in North America. Under the new agreement, Walthers becomes the exclusive US distributor of current and future Rivarossi HO, N, and O scale American prototype models that are produced for the US market.

Walthers to Sell Microsoft Train Simulator
Microsoft's Train Simulator will be available through both hobby outlets and mass-market stores.
Train Simulator will be sold to hobby shops exclusively through Wm. K. Walthers, Microsoft officials say. The computer simulation program, which took three years to develop, will include a poster as a bonus item for consumers who buy the program from a hobby store, and Microsoft also will offer a special point-of-sale display for hobby stores.
However, hobby shops will have to compete with the likes of Wal-Mart, Cosco and Sam's Club, which already have agreed to sell Train Simulator.
Darryl Saunders, a product manager for Microsoft, said the product's suggested retail price will be $54.95. Yet, the product already is being listed for sale on Amazon.com for $45 and Microsoft officials say they believe the mass merchants probably will sell the product as a loss leader to draw people into their stores.
That will put more pressure on hobby stores to keep their prices down and cut into margins. Still, the product may be hot enough initially to use as a promotional item to draw new customers into stores. Microsoft also is recommending stores demo a simulator to introduce buyers to the program.
Reports are that a Version 2 already is in the works, which likely would add to the six routes and nine locomotives in the original simulator. Microsoft also includes development tools in the simulator to allow third-party developers to upload additional locomotives, rolling stock and scenery.
NMRA, MRIA Expand Jr. College
The National Model Railroad Association, with a hand from the Model Railroad Industry Association, is expanding the Jr. College Program, aimed at getting youngsters involved in model railroading. For the first time, it is open to the general public, this year to boys and girls ages 6 to 15 years.
"For years, we've known that the chances that someone will participate in the hobby as an adult are significantly greater if that individual was introduced to the hobby as a young person," says Allen Pollack, president of NMRA. He says the associations plan to work with local youth service organizations, schools and church groups to reach the kids.
"Our approach is built on achievement and fun, hands-on activities that help kids see what they can accomplish," Pollack says.
The program, the brainchild of Swedish model railroading author Rutger Friberg, got its start at the 1998 NMRA convention. Activities range from building trees to mastering switching operations on computer-controlled train layouts.
"All of the costs have been underwritten by companies in the model railroading industry," Pollack says. He adds the companies support the program "because they understand the long-term benefits of bringing more people into the hobby." (As reported in Model Retailer, July 2001)
Air Age, Kalmbach Mark 50 Years
This July marks 50 years that Model Airplane News, which has been published by Air Age Publishing since 1929, has been distributed by Kalmbach Publishing Co.
"Any partnership that flourishes for 50 years is extraordinary," says Louis DeFrancesco, Jr., president of Air Age in Ridgefield, Conn. What makes this one special, he says, "is that both have shared a piece of American history, in railroading and aviation."
Kalmbach, the Waukesha, Wis., publisher, also distributes all other Air Age publications, which include R/C Car Action, R/C Boat Modeler, R/C Nitro, Flight Journal and various annuals.
Store of Knowledge Reorganizing
Another specialty retailer battling the fallout from last year's dismal holiday season is Cerritos, Calif.-based Store of Knowledge.
The privately owned 91-store chain, which partners with public television stations nationally to sell educational toys, games, puzzles, videos and CD-ROMs, was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection March 28, and is in the process of liquidating about $30 million in inventory.
"Basically, Store of Knowledge was hurt by last holiday season and, because this is a highly seasonal business, didn't have the working capital to get through the beginning of this year," says Ted Stolman, the company's counsel.
"That's why Natural Wonders, Zany Brainy and many other specialty retailers are having serious problems right now. Lacking sufficient revenue to recapitalize, the company decided to liquidate its remaining inventory before it went stale."
However, Stolman says, there is a program "currently under consideration to restructure its financial affairs and allow Store of Knowledge to emerge from bankruptcy as a recapitalized company with about 60 stores and the full support of its vendors. That's the objective."
At press time, Stolman was hopeful the plan will succeed, saying, "It would be a real measure of accomplishment and something not easy to achieve in today's retail industry." (As reported in Model Retailer, July 2001)
"World's Greatest Hobby" to Promote RailroadingIn an effort to boost awareness and participation in model railroading nationwide, Kalmbach Publishing Co. is organizing a promotional program under the tagline the "World's Greatest Hobby."
The five-year campaign hopes to build on grassroots promotions of the model railroading and toy train industry with a major public relations effort and programs to make it easier for newcomers to get started in the hobby.
"I'm very encouraged by the response from those who've attended the two presentations we've given so far to industry leaders," says Russ Larson, Kalmbach's senior vice president of editorial and publisher of its Classic Toy Trains, Garden Railways, Model Railroader, FineScale Modeler, The Writer and Plays magazines.
In fact, the Model Railroad Industry Association jumped on board at its May meeting, endorsing the program and offering to help raise funds and help manage the campaign."If this program works the way we think it will, the best of times for this hobby may still be ahead of us," Larson says.
The campaign will target one of the largest demographic groups in the U.S. - the more than 28 million men between ages 45 and 64. Larson notes that one of every four men in that group owned an electric train set as a boy. Besides that nostalgic tie to the industry, this group also has the disposable income, as well as the time, to get involved in a hobby.
In addition, the campaign will encourage those men to share the hobby with their children and grandchildren, potentially widening the program's impact and audience.
The program is multi-pronged. It plans on:
Recruiting "ambassadors." The program will enlist the help of retailers, hobbyists and clubs to expand current efforts to present talks and clinics and host courses on model railroading, with support materials provided.
Developing a Speakers Bureau. The bureau will compile a database of ambassadors and help link up groups looking to organize programs with those speakers.
Initiating a public relations program. This will include press releases, product placement and advertising - outside of traditional hobby publications and including direct mail, Internet, co-op programs and more.
Creating introductory and how-to videos. Kalmbach will produce a 15- to 20-minute video promoting model railroading, which will be included in promotional kits available for dealers to run in their stores and to be used as clips for television features. It also will be available for sale to prospective hobbyists. A one-hour how-to video will demonstrate in detail how to build a layout. The video can be used within demonstrations and could be sold, as well.
Capitalizing on other opportunities, such as attending shows, planning a "Take a Train to Work Day," developing a greatesthobby.com Web site, and other special projects.
A Fresh Start for Zany Brainy?
Educational specialty retailer Zany Brainy Inc., which voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection May 15, received approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware for a $115-million credit line with Wells Fargo Retail Finance. The vote of confidence was good news for the King of Prussia, Pa.-based retailer, which operates 187 stores in 34 states.
"This approval by the bankruptcy court for Debtor-In-Possession financing allows the company to normalize relations with its vendors and get fresh new merchandise to its store shelves as early as next week," company spokeswoman Jamie Schwartz said in May.
The company cited problems relating to its $35-million purchase of 60 Noodle Kidoodle stores last year, its substantial investment in a floundering Internet operation and a "difficult retail climate" for its recent financial struggles that caused the Chapter 11 filing.
In its most recently released earnings report for the 39 weeks ending Oct. 28, 2000, the company reported a loss of $43 million on $211 million in revenue. Sales for that same period were 10 percent lower than the previous year.(as reported in Model Retailer, July 2001)
