Dragon Warbirds - diecast

1/72 Junkers Ju 87G-2, Oberstleutnant "Hans-Ulrich Rudel" III Gruppe Kommander, SG 2, Eastern Front 1944-45 Hans-Ulrich Rudel flew some 2,530 combat missions (a world record), during which he destroyed almost 2,000 ground targets (among them 519 tanks, 70 assault craft/landing boats, 150 self-propelled guns, 4 armoured trains and 800 other vehicles; as well as 9 planes [2 IL-2's and 7 fighters]). He also sank a battleship, two cruisers and a destroyer. He went on to become the most decorated soldier in Germany. The combination of a finely detailed scale model, and the markings of an historical fighter ace's plane, makes this a highly prized asset in any model aircraft collection.

The 2005 International Plastic Modelers' Society USA national convention, slated for July 20-23 at Atlanta's Cobb Galleria Center, got even more intriguing in November with the announcement by Dragon Models that its Dragon Hobby Expo would be held in conjunction with that show. What's more, hobby retailers will have an active role in the latter event, according to officials at Dragon Models USA, City of Industry, Calif.

Liam Cusack, marketing coordinator for Dragon Models USA, says the expo will be held in the hall next to the IPMS convention, and will feature prototypes of upcoming new items, World War II veterans who will be giving speeches and autographing 1:6 figures for which they were the model, and exclusive products available only to retailers who are exhibiting at the Dragon Hobby Expo. Such dealers can sell those products to consumers at the expo or take them back to their store and sell them there. Dragon does not sell product in its hobby show booths.

"Last year we had our booth to show products, but we invite any of the hobby stores selling Dragon stuff to set up in the hall," Cusack says. "We've already started signing up retailers."

Dragon formerly was a major sponsor of the Weekend of Heroes show, which was held last summer. But the advent of the Dragon Hobby Expo "worked out perfectly, because we wanted to work with IPMS and we wanted an East Coast show as well," Cusack says, adding that further details on the expo were to be forthcoming by late 2004 or early 2005.
