Maintenance of Way Cars V by Patrick Harris

CSXT #914623--- CSX gondola converted to crosstie service. Unlike the coal hoppers converted to tie service, these cars deliver the brand new ties. CSX Gentilly Yard, 01-97.

CSXT #914648--- CSX gondola converted to crosstie service. This car, viewed from the yard tower, shows a car loaded with the brand new ties that have not yet even been treated. CSX Middle Yard, Montgomery, Al., 1995.

NW #528155--- NS X-N&W amazingly old gondola, a dead ringer for the Ertl low-side gondola, just like the CSX/ACL car. These cars were built in the 1930s, making it well over 60 years old when seen in New Orleans in NS Oliver Yard (shot from Montegut Street). It is in an unusual NW scheme with the half-moon logo, but in a light grey I've not seen before. 1995.

SOUTHERN #920018---Ancient Southern RR gondola, a car paired with the X-Southern wrecking crane and carrying segments or premade "shoo-fly" track. It was in New Orleans up to about 1997, along with the crane. Both vanished and did not return. NS Oliver yard, New Orleans, (shot from Montegut Street). 06-30-96.

NS #997584--- Bulkhead flat car converted into crosstie car for MOW service on NS. The bulkheads were cut down and sides added for carrying new crossties to where they are needed. NS Hattiesburg Yard, 10-18-97.

WAB #12280--- A Wabash gondola in 1995. Who knew? It is a former Wabash 65' drop-end mill gondola now in MOW service. Siding (since removed) along Florida Avenue, Oliver Junction, New Orleans, 1995.

PALX #4899--- A unique way to make a gondola! This former box car was cut down and a plate welded into the place where the door was. In small letters on the side is marked "Mech Dept Only" and "Paducah". Since it was parked immediately north of the small car repair facility in Louisville, it was used to ferry car/locomotive parts between the larger shops in Paducah (and VMV) and the yard in Louisville. A neat car for

sure! PAL 15th Street Yard, Louisville, Ky. 1994.
