Danse Macabre

A Look at the Ghoulish Side of Modeling

The Predator

by Greg Junker

I started by undercoating the Predator with a light Brown. This was followed by painting the "fishnet" pattern on his armor black. I purposely painted "outside the lines" to create a well-worn, battle-scarred effect.

Drybrushing silver on to the breast plate and armbands gave it the look of metal. The effect was enhanced by liberally dryburshing Rust on the armor.

The most tedious part of building the Predator was the dredlocks. They had to be placed exactly where the instructions said or else they wouldn't fit right. These were painted black green with gold rings.

Grandpa Bug

by Mike Wohl

My daughter wanted my to do something different - something neither truly human nor entirely animal. The result was Grandpa Bug, a creature not unlike one I thought I saw running around in the bathroom one night. The armature is articulated. You can move the figure as though it was a stop action figure.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon

by Greg Junker

After completely assembling the model, I sprayed a green base coat on it. Then I highlighted it with Light Green. Using silver, I dappled dots all over it to create the impression of scales. Silver was also painted on the gills. The Creature was finished after a black wash was applied.

The cigarette is not included in the kit; I added it. Smoking is, after all, what killed the dinosaurs.

Queen of the Dead

by Mike Wohl

Queen of the Dead is a classic vision of the mummy as shambling horror.

Small talismans were often included in the mummy's wrapping and one such can be seen nestled in her chest.

One of the four canopic jars used to store vital organs and the like can also be seen in the background.

The glowing red eyes are the result of using Tamiya Clear Red over a red and yellow base coat.
